"There is a sacred window of time. A time for complete rejuvenation of a woman’s physical, mental and spiritual health, a time for deep, extended bonding with her newborn. The first 40 days after birth set the stage for her next 40 years.” -Ysha Oakes
Welcome to Prairie Blooms Wellness!
I'm Jessica Smith, certified Doula, Pediatric Nurse and 5th generation to the Palouse region. Prairie Blooms is named for my love of the North Western prairies and the natural wildflowers. I love that in a field of grass there's little hidden beauties, blooming wildflowers. Same for our journey of life, we have amazing little beauties(new babies) that add to our life and make it colorful and brighter!
When I had my three littles, I soon was awakened to the fact that in our culture there is a large disconnect between birth and postpartum. Like many, I prepared for the birth but never really put much thought into postpartum. While planning for birth is important, planning for the postpartum period is even more important. I found myself struggling with lack of resources and unable to ask for help. I came across, Julia Jones Newborn Mother's Collective and found the missing link in my postpartum experience. Through the wisdom of ancient traditions and scientific role of Oxytocin, I learned what we have missed in our culture. While there's much from ancient traditions and culture, we can't apply to our modern lifestyle there are two culturally universal things we can do, help and support the new mother and provide warm prepared meals.
I serve the Moscow/Pullman area and rural surrounding areas. I have training in Ayurveda Postpartum care and Birth/Postpartum Doula training through Mountain Midwives. I am certified as a Midwife Assistant, trained in Rebozo labor support, and certified as a Lactation Educator. I am furthering my education for the International Board of Lactation Consulting credential. I have a deep interest in ancient traditional cultures as well as nutritional and herbal wellness, especially those surrounding motherhood. I am ever learning!
As your doula and your health advocate, my goal is to support you through your experience. I work with my clients to apply what feels right for you and your needs. I assist in making this transitional time as positive! I want to guide you where necessary with an open mind well as empower you to speak your truth and promote self care. Let's have a warm drink together!
A Postpartum Doula supports the new mother in the transitional phase between birth to the end of the forth trimester.
We trouble shoot any problems you may be experiencing and try to work through some possible solutions. At the end of our session we will create a customized care plan to meet your breastfeeding goals.
We support moms to be through labor, birth and most importantly postpartum (our specialty and focus area!).
